notes and essays by arthur tress

At every stage in his development as a photographer, Tress has claryfied
his thoughts and intentions in notebook jottings, in theoretical writings and
in critical expositions of his own work after the fact. The selection of texts
reproduced here were written during the decade 1970 to 1980 and thus
provide a vivid framework for the successive groups of photographs in
this online exhibition. All texts reproduced here were originally publsihed
in »Talisman« [edited by Marco Livingstone. London: Thames and Hudson,
1986. ] pages 147-153. We thank Arthur Tress for his permission to publish
them here in digital form for the first time.
