York. 1974-1981
In 1974 Burroughs returned to the United States. He
moved into
- an
apartment on the lower East Side of
Manhattan. It used to be
- the
locker room of a gym,
and became known as »The Bunker«.
- With
his return to the States Burroughs decided to shelve ver-
- bal
experiments and write a more or less straight
narrative.
- The
result was »Cities of the Red Night«. While working on this
- project
that he encountered a writer's
block. He wrote some
- essays
instead, and
rode it out. At the same time Burroughs
- also
developed a rich social life, entertaining old friends, new
- acquaintances
and celebrities like Andy Warhol, Lou Reed, Lau-
- rie
Anderson, and Madonna at The Bunker.
