BURROUGHS PORTRAIT GALERIE
      New York. 1974-1981

In 1974 Burroughs returned to the United States. He moved into
an apartment on the lower East Side of Manhattan. It used to be
the locker room of a gym, and became known as »The Bunker«.
With his return to the States Burroughs decided to shelve ver-
bal experiments and write a more or less straight narrative.
The result was »Cities of the Red Night«. While working on this
project that he encountered a writer's block. He wrote some
essays instead, and rode it out. At the same time Burroughs
also developed a rich social life, entertaining old friends, new
acquaintances and celebrities like Andy Warhol, Lou Reed, Lau-
rie Anderson, and Madonna at The Bunker.
