BURROUGHS
PORTRAIT GALERIE
- London.
1954-1961
In the fall of 1959 Burroughs and Gysin moved to London
- which
- remained
their headquarters for the next thirteen years,
with fre-
- quent
stays in New York City, Tangiers, and
Paris. Throughout
the
- 1960s
they collaborated in many media:
in writing & collaging; with
- the
tape recorder and the film camera, while the more difficult
- technical
aspects were taken over by special talent. Antony Balch
- helped
with the films; and with the
tape recordings it was Ian So-
- merville,
who had
a complete sound studio placed at his disposal
- by
Beatle Paul McCartney. The
prose works Burroughs completed
- during
the 60s
consisted of a trilogy of novels, and a large number
- of
essays dealing with my interest in scientology
and electronic
- revolution
among other
things. The novels [»The Soft Machine«,
- »The
Ticket That Exploded«, and »Nova Express«] were composed
- by
cutting-up older
routines as well as new material gained
from
- tape
experiments.
In 1967 Burroughs moved into 8 Duke Street
- and
started writing straight narrative again. »The Wild Boys« in-
- augurated
a cycle of novels in
that style which continued with
- »Exterminator!«,
»Port of
Saints«, and »Ah Pook is Here«. In these
- books
he was increasingly preoccupied by the
themes of space
- travel
and biological mutation as a prerequisite for space travel.
